15 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, October 7, 2009 KSM launches new Fall Food Drive 2009 has been a difficult year for many of the 14,000 people in Oakville who live at or below the poverty line. Although there are signs that the economy is starting to turn around, the food bank at Kerr Street Ministries (KSM) is busier than ever before and the shelves are nearly bare. "Over the past two months more than 200 people have relied on the Kerr Street Food Bank for the first time. Last month, more than 1,000 URBAN MEETS COUNTRY: The new equestrian centre operated by Neal family members came just to receive a Bertin on Dundas Street west of Bronte Road. fresh loaf of bread. Unemployment is now at 9.4 per cent in Ontario and the situation is critical for many of our clients," said Benjamin Ward, KSM's executive director. To meet these increasing needs, KSM is launching its Fall Food Drive in an effort to replenish the shelves. For the months of October and November, KSM is encouraging adults, school children and local businesses to bring non-perishable food items and/or monetary donations, used in part for dairy and meat vouchers to the centre. New for this year's Fall Food Drive are reusable grocery bags, available for pick up at the KSM office, which encourage people to fill the bags for the food bank while grocery shopping. To make a donation of food or money, call KSM at 905-845-7485 or drop off items to 484 Kerr St. KSM provides support and care primarily for children, youths and low-income families through numerous programs including its food bank at Kerr Street Market, a Christmas sponsorship program, a summer day camp for kids, pre-natal programs for expectant mothers, and other kids' and youth programs.
