OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF By Tina Depko meeting Thursday night as part of the Town's municipal lighting strategy and policy study. But many questions from the 100member crowd went unanswered, as the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB), whose request for field lights at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School prompted the study, did not attend. "We sent both school boards an invitation, but we did not hear back from either of them," said Domenic Lunardo, Commissioner of Community Services with the Town of Oakville. The first part of the Town's municipal lighting strategy and policy study deals specifically with municipal light- Domenic Lunardo, Commissioner, Community Services, Town of Oakville ing of existing sports fields. Information from the meeting, and comments e-mailed to the town from residents, will be used to draft a policy to go before the Community Services Committee Nov. 10 and Town Council on Nov. 16. The HCDSB wants to install field lights at two of its high schools in Oakville. The previous natural turf field did not have field lights, causing concern for many of the neighbours. Field lights have also been proposed at St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School, where a new artificial field is currently being installed. The previous natural-turf field was not lit, also drawing concerns from residents. The HCDSB is taking the Town to the Ontario Municipal Board over the field lights proposal at Loyola. The school board believes it already has permission from the Town to install the lights through permits it obtained this summer. The Town disagrees. A hearing has been set for Oct. 16. Lunardo said Thursday night the resulting policy that comes from this part of the lighting study will help Town Council make decisions regarding field lights, particularly where they can be installed and what restrictions should be placed on them. This portion of the study encompasses fields owned by the Town and school boards, as well as privately owned fields, Lunardo said. It includes fields used for baseball, soccer, rugby, football, lacrosse, etc. It excludes facilities used for such sports as tennis or golf courses. The Town has 107 fields, 24 of which have lights. Only one field is artificial. There are 40 additional fields owned by school boards or other pub See Mayor page 9 Vision To be the most livable town in Canada e a Difference Join a Town of Oakville Committee and Mak Mayor Rob Burton and Oakville Town Council invite and encourage you to apply to serve on a town committee and help make Oakville the most livable town in Canada.
