Vol. 52 No. 122 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2009 32 Pages $1.00 (plus GST) Deal is inked Rushing for doughnuts on Edgemere The Town of Oakville has reached a settlement with Edgemere Estates that, if approved by the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB), will allow the Town to secure significant waterfront property. The settlement, reached Monday night, will see Edgemere Estates dedicate a 15-metre wide linear strip of waterfront property, together with connecting pathways, to the town. Edgemere will also construct a public park and trail system, at its own expense, which will run from Maple Grove Drive to the east, along the shore of Lake Ontario and connect back to Lakeshore Road by way of a trail through Wedgewood Creek on the western side of the property. "This is a significant achievement for all residents of Oakville," said Mayor Rob Burton. "There is a finite amount of waterfront property and making it accessible to the public is a winning situation for everyone." In exchange for the donation of the waterfront property, Edgemere will be allowed to proceed with its development proposal, which permits the building of three residential structures, each containing three flats and residential underground parking. Town staff point out that given the uniqueness of Town to hire expert advisors By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF See Deal page 3 Vital Signs inside Today's Oakville Beaver contains a copy of the 2009 Vital Signs report, which was released by the Oakville Community Foundation (OCF) this week. The town was graded between A and D in 11 categories, each of which have graded subsections. This is the second year the Oakville Community Foundation has participated in Vital Signs. This year's report for Oakville is titled Possibilities. The OCF hopes all members of the community will take the time to read the report, celebrating the accomplishments, as well as finding ways to help in areas that need improvement. As the date for the building of a 900-megawatt gas-fired power plant, on the Ford-owned lands at 1500 Royal Windsor Dr. draws closer, Town council is seeking help to determine what options remain in its fight for cleaner air in Oakville. Council voted Monday to authorize the hiring of environmental legal counsel and other experts in hopes of ensuring that if, and when, a power plant is built, it does not harm the surrounding community. "Council's primary concern has always been about the negative impact the new power plant could have on Oakville's air quality and the health of our residents," said Mayor Rob Burton. "The province and the OPA (Ontario Power Authority) have made their decision to locate the plant in Oakville. Our fight for cleaner air in the Oakville-Clarkson airshed is just beginning."
