The 18th annual OTMH Candlelight Ball, presented by Barrington's and Murron's Cabinetree, will welcome attendees to The True North, taking you on an exciting culinary adventure as it highlights a taste of Canada with two renowned Canadian chefs. On Saturday, Nov. 7, famed Food Network hosts Michael Bonacini and Mark McEwan will team up to create a home-grown Canadianthemed menu exclusively for the OTMH Candlelight Ball. Chefs Bonacini and McEwan will be on site to present a unique, exquisite and mouth watering culinary experience ranging from a tantalizing double baked goat's cheese soufflé, melt in your mouth beef tenderloin with truffle risotto and a show-stopping chocolate torte. "The Candlelight Ball is one of the most anticipated social events of the year in Oakville. We're so very proud to be involved as supporters," said Brenda Barrington, who along with Gaye Farncombe, is serving as the honourary co-chair of the Gala committee. Farncombe added that "with the addition of these two fantastic chefs, we're in for an even more memorable experience. Best of all, we'll raise more than $500,000, in one night, for our community hospital." To add to the all-Canadian theme, the silent and live auctions will feature some items with a maple leaf flare, including: the popular Ultimate Pond Hockey experience featuring local NHL Alumni Nathan Lafayette, Rob Zamuner and others; an Inuit Soap Stone carving valued at more than $6,000; and, a priceless backyard barbecue experience catered by the Oakville Firefighters and The Perfect Steak. Attendees will also have the opportunity to win a 52-inch LCD panel TV, courtesy of H2 Systems and bid on the exclusive Doctor's Dinner, featuring culinary creations and wine collections from some of Oakville's most popular physicians. Cancer Society looking for jailbirds There's still time to make an "arrest" for the Canadian Cancer Society Jail-N-Bail. The Canadian Cancer Society is still registering jailbirds for the Jail-NBail event set to take place on Friday, Oct. 23 at Oakville Place Shopping Mall. At Jail-N-Bail, members of the community agree to "do some time" in an effort to help make cancer history. "Jailbirds" of all ages will be "arrested" on humorous charges such as being a baseball addict or wearing white after Labour Day. The Halton Regional Police have teamed up with the Society to help "arrest" all wanted felons and will bring them to a makeshift jail located at centre court of the mall. Jailbirds will be brought before celebrity judges, who will review each jailbird's charges and set bail for each perpetrator. "Sentencing" will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Before entering their jail cell, all felons will have their official mug shot taken and fingerprints taken. Once in jail, participants will have the chance to call friends, colleagues, their mom -- anyone who will help them raise their bail (set at a pre-determined amount) to help set them free. Thanks to the generous support of Telus at Oakville Place, jailbirds will have luxury of using a new Telus phone to raise their bail during their stay in jail.
