OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, October 9, 2009 · 16 Racing locals say adventure is in their blood Continued from page 7 toughest road race in the world." John competed again in 2007, this time with his then fiancée Emine serving as his navigator. Emine, who had previously only experienced racing through the television, described the experience as one to remember. "I didn't know what to expect and I figured, `How hard could it be to be a navigator.' I soon found out that it's not an easy job, but it's exciting, exhilarating and you just want to do it again and again," said Emine. "As exciting as it is I could not do this with another driver. One of the reasons I am comfortable with this is I am comfortable with John's driving. I trust him, he doesn't take risks, he knows what he's doing, he's in control and that makes all the difference in the world." John was similarly impressed with Emine's ability to navigate noting that she was not afraid of the car's speed and did not get nauseous, which can happen, he said, when someone is constantly looking up and down to check the route on a turn by turn basis. John and Emine's teamwork paid off during the race with the couple attaining and overall rank of fourth place in their class. Now married, the couple will race as a team again when this year's race begins on Oct. 23. The couple said they know they will have to push the Mustang hard to get close to the same ranking as 2007, but also point out this is something they are prepared to do. Participation in the race is not cheap with a $6,000 entry fee and another $10,000 needed to get the car ready for the race, to get it down to Mexico, to pay for hotels, etc. The winner of the race will not recoup these costs as the prize for ultimate victory in "My father was a big adventurer and I guess it trickled down to my brother and myself." John Nielsen Road racer La Carrera Panamerica is not millions of dollars, but rather bragging rights and a trophy. For John that's more than enough. "It think it's the adventure," said John. "There's adventure in my background. My father was a big adventurer and I guess it trickled down to my brother and myself. I've travelled around the world and this is just another adventure. Most people don't get the opportunity to see things like this." John also pointed out that the drivers take on a kind of celebrity role during the race with thousands of people turning out to see them and their cars. "I think it's the most fun you could have in a race car because you are really close with the people and they treat you really well down there," said John. "We're not racing in the cities, we're not racing on a track, we're racing out in the country with the people, going through little towns and for them it's a big thrill, it's like having Formula 1 come to your town...They close the schools, they close the banks in some towns because we're coming through and they really want to see us." John noted he is still looking for people and businesses to sponsor him in this coming event and anyone interested can call him at 416 986 2353 or e-mail him at atvexplorer@yahoo.com.
