17 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, October 14, 2009 Paint Shop Facilities at Porsche Cuts Emissions to a Minimum Metroland Newspapers Carguide Magazine The Porsche factory in Stuttgart, Germany, is expanding its innovative automobile production operations at the main factory in Zuffenhausen with one of the most modern and environmentally friendly paint shops in the world, and one that will incorporate cutting-edge technology never before used in the car industry. Work began a few weeks ago and the steel construction is set to be completed early 2010. This will be followed by the construction of the facade and technically complex internal facility structure. The new paint shop will be formally commissioned in 2011. The latest technologies, particularly in the area of environmental protection, are being used throughout the new building. The painting process features complete dust protection as it is encapsulated 100 per cent. This method not only enhances the already high quality of the vehicle paint coat, but also reduces the required amount of conditioned hall air required. A particularly innovative electrostatic precipitator for paint dust cuts the emission of solvents and particles to a minimum. The painting process is able to do without the mandatory 60 metre-high chimney. This is attributed to the increased amount of circulated air and the exceptionally effective exhaust air purifier that only requires a small smokestack, which extends 10 metres over the roof. Another environmentally friendly innovation is a highly efficient energy management system. Large-scale Series Production of the smart fortwo electric drive to begin in 2012 Metroland Newspapers Carguide Magazine Daimler AG has announced that it has selected the smart plant in Hambach, France, as the location for future series production of the smart fortwo electric drive. As of 2012, the highly innovative electric vehicle, equipped with the most modern lithium-ion-battery, will roll off the assembly line in large-scale production and will be offered to customers through the smart sales network. The announcement was made on the occasion of an official visit of French President Nicolas Sarkozy at the Hambach plant. Daimler will invest a double-digit million euro amount at the Hambach plant for production of the next generation of the smart fortwo electric drive with lithium-ionbattery. In November 2009, the plant will start to produce a small series of about 1,000 units of the smart fortwo electric drive. In a first step, these vehicles will be provided to customers participating in various mobility projects in major cities in Europe and the U.S., in order to generate additional feedback from the use under everyday conditions. As of 2012, the smart fortwo electric drive will be produced in significantly larger volumes as a regular part of the smart product portfolio and will be sold through the smart sales network.
