Jr. Devils exact revenge on Lords Field hockey team motivated by seniors' elimination By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR BURLINGTON -- Days after watching Nelson knock their senior teammates out of the Halton high school field hockey playoffs, Oakville Trafalgar's juniors were determined to avoid a similar fate. Dana Ball broke a scoreless tie midway through the second half and OT controlled play the rest of the way as the Red Devils blanked Nelson 1-0 in the Halton junior final Tuesday in Burlington. The junior championship is the second consecutive title for the Red Devils, who also beat Nelson by a 1-0 score in last year's final. "We watched the senior game (last week, when Nelson beat OT in the semifinals)," Ball said. "It felt like all the pressure was on us to win because OT's always a winning team. We really wanted to bring it back for our school." Ball's decisive marker came from close range as she took a pass from Aline Saffran, had her initial shot stopped and then whacked the rebound between the pads of Nelson goaltender Sam Crumpton. Ball, playing field hockey this year for the first time, was both thrilled and surprised to be the hero. "It was amazing. It was so cool. Everyone knew it was me and they all jumped on me," said the 14-year-old. "It was a shocked feeling, like did that really happen?" OT head coach Kelly Grzesik wasn't as surprised to see Ball net the winner. "She plays ice hockey and I know she has a good sense of being around the net, getting the ball and scoring. She may not have all the moves, but she knows how to get the ball in the net," said Grzesik. "In the second half, something changed in her. I'd never seen her run like that. She really wanted it." Goaltender Holly Jasnich also played a key role in the Devils' victory, making several saves when Nelson dominated play in the first half and posting the shutout. "Holly was solid. As the season went on, she kind of came into her own and got more aggressive," Grzesik said. OT was 5-1-1 during the regular season, then needed penalty flicks to defeat Bishop Reding 3-2 in the quarter-finals. The Devils blanked Aldershot 1-0 in the semifinal round.
