27 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, October 30, 2009 Volunteers are at the heart of the Santa parade I n just over three weeks, Santa Claus will be riding his sleigh through the streets of Oakville at this year's parade. Joining Santa Claus for the parade's 61st anniversary will be one of the most exciting lineups in the history of the parade -- schools, floats, bands, and costumed entertainers representing numerous local businesses, service clubs and community groups. This year's theme is A Rock 'n' Roll Christmas and the anticipation grows as we hear rumours of some creative and unique entries this year. The parade will be extraspecial for volunteers Dee McAulay and her son, Carson, this year. Carson has just returned from a tour in Afghanistan, and he'll be marshalling alongside his mom for the first time. "There's just no place like home and after experiencing Afghanistan for a sevenmonth deployment, there is definitely no place like home. We have so much to be thankful for here in Oakville," said Carson. His mom, a long-time parade volunteer, is thrilled to have Carson home. "Volunteering in the parade is a great way to celebrate our community and I know seeing him beside me as a marshal will be something I won't soon forget. Carson and I would like to encourage other families to come out and volunteer on parade day." The Santa Claus Parade demonstrates annually the spirit of community. Nestled at the heart of the parade are the numerous volunteers that give their time each year to bring this important tradition to Oakville. "Volunteers make the parade possible," said Pam Damoff, chair of the Oakville Santa Claus Parade. "Without the people who walk the route as costumed characters or escorts, or assist with parade marshalling and logistics, parade day would simply not happen," said Damoff. The parade itself is organized and run by a dedicated group of volunteers whose tireless efforts begin early in the spring and culminate each year on parade day. Information about the various volunteer opportunities can be found online at www.oakvillesantaclausparade.ca. High school students will be eligible to receive volunteer hours for their participation. It's never too late to be part of this wonderful community tradition. The Santa Claus Parade is always looking for volunteers to assist on parade day to ensure the parade runs smoothly. A meeting for all volunteers will take place Thursday, Nov. 12 at Sir John Colborne Seniors Recreation Centre, 1565 Old Lakeshore Rd. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. Celebrating its 61st year, the Oakville Santa Claus Parade is a cherished tradition in our town. The 2009 parade takes place Saturday, Nov. 21, beginning at 9 a.m. This year's parade will begin at Lakeshore Road and Reynolds Street, go west on Lakeshore to Kerr Street, north on Kerr and end at Kerr and Stewart streets. -- Submitted by the Oakville Santa Claus Parade Wednesday, November 4th d e a e 9:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m. & 5:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 30 m 3 a.m. 11:30 a.m. : 0 m 5:30 p m 3 m OPEN HOUSE We're Closer Than You Currently, over 550 students residing Burlington, F Currently, over 550 students residing n Burl ngton Flam Currently, over 550 students residing in Burlington, Flamb urrently over rr ve students residing Burlington, Flamborough uden esiding Burlington, de sid din Burlington, urlington, and Oakville take advantage our daily busing se and Oakville take advantage of our daily busing ser vice and Oakville take advantage of our daily busing service. n a ville vanta ntage ag daily bus ng service ly busing THINK CO-ED MONTESSORI, JUNIOR, MIDDLE, SENIOR w ww.h sc .on.ca ww w. hs c. on.ca www.hsc.on.ca | 905-389-1367 | 299 Fennell Ave. West, Hamil w w h s c n.ca .ca ca a 05-389-1367 5-389-1367 -389-1367 389-1367 89-1367 9-1367 -1367 1367 367 67 7 Fe Fen F est, Hamilt Hamilto Hami Ham Hamilton Ha H Jazz it Up for Down Syndrome The Halton Down Syndrome Association will Jazz it Up for its 25th anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 7.
