Letters to the editor 9 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, November 13, 2009 · www.oakvillebeaver.com Idling car bad for vehicle and environment Re: Warming up unlocked car is invitation for car theft, Oakville Beaver, Nov. 6 You write of cars stolen from owners who warm up their car and leave the car running with the doors unlocked. The police have some tips for owners wanting to discourage this theft. You missed the most important one. Do not warm up your car. If the temperature is about -30 then, yes, warm it up for one minute before driving. Get in your car, turn on the ignition and wait one minute. Any longer and it is not good for the motor to let it idle. Idling is not good for our air either. Why were people in Oakville in November warming their cars anyway? It was hardly at zero last week. SUSAN WELLS New hospital burden on taxpayers Continued from page 6 Unfortunately, very few people have semiprivate coverage and those Oakville residents who require a bed will have to pay up or go on a lengthy waiting list for one of the remaining 20 per cent public ward beds. Not only is Oliver misleading the public, but Oakville MP Kevin Flynn and the Liberal Provincial Government should be ashamed to demand that all new hospitals built in Ontario must have 80 per cent private beds knowing full well that excludes a large portion of the population and is a two-tier system. HHS has held a couple of open houses and at least one more is planned, but what is needed is a public debate. At that time, Mr. Flynn, Mr. Oliver, Mayor Burton, the private sector and the public can discuss the business plan and be open to a public debate that will have some transparency. What I have read so far sounds like a major step towards a two-tier health system and a major financial burden on the citizens of Oakville, unless of course you are lucky enough to pay.
