Community shortchanged 7 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, November 13, 2009 · www.oakvillebeaver.com Continued from page 6 terms on committees as the drama unfolded at a fast pace. Like many who have spoken to me while I'm out in the community, I'm left to wonder about Councillor Robinson's rationale for his committee choices as he stated in your paper. It's troubling to question his process, but it seems he personally selected names without looking at the bigger picture; not weighing all sides or allowing for due consideration of what should have been a simple matter seems like sloppy thinking and bad decision-making. I hope he uses a better personal process when considering his voting on issues that have a larger impact on the entire town. I also ask he take the time to publically walk us through his every step, person by person, committee by committee, so we can better understand how he arrived at his motion. As well, I believe the chair of our Town Council, Mayor Rob Burton, missed or possibly ignored the opportunity to fully explore Councillor Knoll's concerns due to the want of expediency. From my seat, the entire matter felt rushed without need. The mayor's comments in your article that he supports keeping "in place councillors when council is happy with their performance" seems to ignore any written policy or any form of public or committee review of a councillor's performance/attendance on these committees. And I fail to see the logic in keeping coun- cillor in place when they have served the limit while other members ask to contribute to those committees. As a cook, I recognize that classic dishes are wonderful, but have often found replacing one element in a recipe can create a more rewarding result. I think the mayor shortchanged our community by not raising questions over Councillor Robinson's motion -- as would have been his right and as something he's done in the past when he disagreed with the proceedings -- by allowing a single, sweeping motion to pass through Council without spelling out the other options we had as community representatives. This would have been the better path, if not for those feeling marginalized by the speedy proceedings, then for the public so they could have a better understanding on what is happening in our oft-stated open municipal government. Finally, I agree with Ward 3 Councillor Keith Bird when he stated that every single member of Council is fully capable of performing their duties on the committees. However, I think it's unfair that one motion is quickly passed which doesn't allow for every single member of council to get their full opportunity to do so -- in the case of Councillor Knoll, over the past three years -- for the people we have agreed to serve through their votes.
