The risk of developing prostate cancer increases with age, with men being diagnosed as early as their 40s. Men with a family history of the disease are more at risk to develop the disease at an early age. Ethnicity is also a factor. Men of African or Caribbean descent are 65 per cent more likely to develop prostate cancer than a CaucasianAmerican man. Men do not need to die from this disease. With regular medical check ups, prostate cancer can be caught early and is 90 per cent curable if detected and treated in the early stages. In Oakville, this is AMEC's second year of participating in Movember. Last year the AMEC Mo's and Faux's (the women who help host events and support the men) comprised of 31 mo bros and raised over $5,500 for the cause including company matching. "This year we have 37 mo bros growing the mo with a guaranteed $40 donation from each of them," said Nikki Grieco, a geostatistician with AMEC. The numbers catch the attention of Grieco, who found out about Movember when her brother, Mason, who is in Australia participated. Last year, Grieco initiated Movember at AMEC. "I work with a lot of guys, I have a lot of guys who are friends," said Grieco, adding, guys typically don't look after their health. While her mom has had breast cancer, Galipeau is the only person Grieco knows who has had prostate cancer. "I can't describe it. It's not a personal thing for me. I know what gets done for breast cancer, but 50 per cent of the population has just as scary a disease and it's 50 per cent who tend to not look after themselves," said Grieco. Throughout the month, Grieco has compiled and disseminated a series of informative e-mails office wide providing key facts about prostate cancer and encouraging employees to look after their own health as well as support the cause. In addition, a number of events are planned for the office. "Movember was introduced to many Grade 9 students involved in the Take Your Kids to Work Day on Nov. 4 as they helped AMEC volunteers sell baked goods around the office to raise funds," said Grieco. The bake sale raised $270. In recognizing the tie as the logo of Prostate Cancer Canada, AMEC employees were encouraged to wear ties last Thursday. Galipeau will also share his experience with co-workers in a lunch-time presentation," said Grieco. Finally, the month will end with a Mo Office Party, which will include a barbecue chicken lunch and prizes -- to the Fullest Mo, the Weakest Mo, the Most Stylish Mo and the Most Dedicated Mo Bro. "Absolutely vital," is how Richard Lewis, director of legal and taxation accounting for AMEC, describes raising the profile of prostate cancer -- and it's fun. "The esprit de corps built amongst the guys in the office who are participating and the support from colleagues is great," said Lewis, a top fundraiser last year who believes men should pay more attention to their health and realize they are not infallible or immune to potential issues. For information, visit the Movember website at http://ca.movember.com or the Prostate Cancer Canada at www.prostatecancer.ca. You can view AMEC's Mo Space on the Movember website by entering in the team name (AMEC Mo's and Faux's) in the Member search. Editor's Note: As men across the community participate, they can be found on the Movember Mo Space webpage. To name a few: here at The Oakville Beaver, Sports Editor Jon Kuiperij is participating with his team, the Nodekes. Meanwhile at Prime Time Sports Bar, a team of friends is participating and has dubbed themselves the Oakville Beavers (see photo above).
