Last week in Oakville, Louku stood before a crowd of about 300 people at the Operating Engineers Banquet Hall and Conference Centre and explained to them how Charles Mulli, founder of the Mully Children's Family Foundation, rescued her. "One day when I was staying with other street children I heard them talking about Mr. Mulli. The kids said he was a good person that he has helped many children and given them futures and then I wondered how about me," said Louku. That day Louku approached Mulli, who was distributing food to the people of Kipsongo. A video shot during that encounter was played at the Oakville presentation and shows Mulli visiting a gathering of hundreds of people including Louku. Eyes filled with tears and desperation Louku told Mulli about her life and problems and begged him to add her to the more than 2,000 orphaned children being cared for by the Mully Children's Family Foundation. Mulli agreed. Louku is now in Grade 8 with a bright future to look forward to. Louku was among about 20 children from the Mully Children's Family Foundation who travelled with Mulli and his wife Esther to Oakville, last week, as part of a North American campaign to raise badly needed funds for the foundation. The Oakville event, organized by the Harvest Bible Chapel, succeeded in raising more than $29,000 for Mulli's cause. As part of the event, Louku sang and danced as part of a children's choir, which provoked several standing ovations from the "It is a miracle for me to be here. I thank God for this opportunity." During one intermission Louku was called on to speak to the audience about her own experiences with the foundation. "It is a miracle for me to be here. I thank God for this opportunity," said Louku. "I love my dad Charles Mulli and my mom Esther Mulli. I thank them for rescuing me and for taking care of me, taking me as their daughter. I thank them very, very much." Louku went on to note that once her education is complete she would like to return to Kipsongo and use it to help others who suffer on the streets as she used to. Despite the abuse she endured, Louku said she bears her relatives no ill will and would like to help them, too. "In the Mully Children's Family (Foundation) they have taught us how to forgive," said Louku. "For the ways (my relatives) mistreated me I have forgiven them." A former street kid himself, Mulli was able to escape a life of poverty by developing a successful fuel distribution business. The self-made millionaire, however, turned his back on a life of wealth and privilege in 1989 when he decided to spend all that he had to create several orphanages, which provide food, shelter and education to Kenya's street children. This life-altering decision came shortly after the theft of Mulli's car. "This car was stolen by street boys," said Mulli.
