www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, November 20, 2009 · 14 FI plan approved for new Clearview school By Tina Depko OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Halton District School Board (HDSB) trustees have approved a plan on how the French immersion program will work when the new dual-track, JK-8 Clearview school opens in Sept. 2010. The recommendation approved at Wednesday night's meeting results in the HDSB grandfathering all Grade 7 and 8 French immersion students residing in the Clearview area at EJ James for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years. The school board will provide busing for these students. This means that the French immersion program at the new school in Clearview will start in Sept. 2010 as a Grade 1-6 program and grow into a Grade 1-8 program during the next two years. Students in the English stream in Grades 7 and 8 in fall 2010 will go to Clearview. The French immersion recommendation comes as a result of a series of meetings held from July through October with the impacted parents and community members. The approved recommendation means that all Grade 7 and Grade 8 French immersion Clearview students will be bused to EJ James in 2010-11. The following year, only Grade 8 French immersion students will be bused to EJ James. By 2012-13, Clearview will offer a full Grade 1-8 French immersion program. The board reports that there will be 22 students, including 12 students in Grade 7 and 10 students in Grade 8, in French immersion from the Clearview area for Sept. 2010. Board staff argued the educational needs of this small cohort would be better served by grouping the students with those in the EJ James French immersion program. For information on this recommendation, see the Oct. 21 agenda under the Boardroom tab at the school board's website at www.hdsb.ca.
