Here comes Santa Santa's coming to town tomorrow in the 61st annual Oakville Santa Claus Parade. The parade is a long-standing Oakville tradition that ushers in the Christmas season -- and will do so this year with a rock'n'roll Christmas theme for the big day. Floats, bands, clowns, Christmas characters and more will entertain thousands of residents, young and young-at-heart, expected to line the streets of the downtown and Kerr Village. The fun begins at 9 a.m. when the parade will start at Lakeshore Road and Reynolds Street. It will move west along Lakeshore Road to Kerr Street, then north on Kerr and culminate at Kerr and Stewart streets. The first float should arrive at Lakeshore and Navy at about 9:20 a.m., and at Lakeshore and Kerr at 9:30 a.m. and finally at Kerr and Stewart at about 9:55 a.m. The parade will take place rain or shine, so dress for the weather. Every year the parade is preceded by the Oakville Firefighters' Toy Drive and the Kinsmen Food Drive for the Salvation Army Jingle Bell Fund. The Friends of Falgarwood also participate each year selling red noses for charity. They walk the parade route dressed as clowns and sell red noses for $2. This year's recipient charities will be Wellspring and Kerr Street Ministries (KSM). So bring spare change, canned goods and new, unwrapped toys on parade day. The winner of this year's parade colouring contest, Calvin van Voorst, 9, will be Honourary Grand Marshall and ride with Mrs. Claus in a carriage leading the parade. Runners up, Jarryd Farrell, 5, Victoria Lawrynowycz, 9 and Samantha Hunter, 10, will ride in Santa's float. Kids are encouraged to bring their letters to Santa on parade day -- addressed to Santa Claus, North Pole, HOH OHO and postal carriers walking in the parade will collect them. New this year, will be The Peoples' Choice Award to be awarded based on parade watchers' votes. After the parade, people can vote on the parade website at www.oakvillesantaclausparade.ca. Voting will be open until 5 p.m. Nov. 25. Oakville Transit will run a free Santa Shuttle every 15 minutes from the Oakville GO station (Cross Avenue at Trafalgar Road) -- stopping at all regular stops along Reynolds to the Church/Dunn bus terminal.
