The new firefighters were sworn in Friday during a graduation ceremony at Town Hall's South Atrium. As more than a hundred friends and family looked on, each recruit, clad in their blue dress uniform, was called to the front of the room where they were saluted by Oakville Fire Chief Richard Boyes and other dignitaries and presented with their fire helmet and diploma. During the ceremony, Mayor Rob Burton spoke about the importance of the graduating class and the role its members will play in Oakville's future. "Firefighters help us when we're hurt or in danger. You put your life on the line to save the lives of others, but, and this is very important to me and the other members of council, we do not want you to lose your life. We do not want you to take unnecessary risks," said Burton. "As council, we have built your department up and added to its strength for the purpose of making it the most professional fire department, so that loss of life is not something that happens in Oakville. We expect, as a result of the investments we've made, that fire crews will be able to assemble at fire scenes in a timely fashion and always engage in only the most professional, proficient and safe rescue techniques known to the profession."
