www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, November 25, 2009 · 24 Salvation Army needs help with its kettle campaign By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Salvation Army Community Church of Oakville helps those in need -- especially at Christmas -- but needs help to do it. Volunteers are urgently sought to operate the local Christmas Kettle locations. The annual Kettle Drive kicked into gear Friday as the Christmas tree was lit in downtown Oakville's Towne Square. Nine kettle locations will now operate daily until Christmas Eve. "All money raised goes towards the Salvation Army's Community & Family Services for programming and direct service to those in need in our community," said Aisha Chaney, community services co-ordinator for the Salvation Army. "Volunteers are still urgently needed to take a three-hour shift, and are asked to call Kathy Macdonald at 289-838-9163," said Chaney. NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER ON THE JOB: Brian Cyr stands with a Salvation Army Christmas Kettle at Oakville Place like he has done for 10 years. Volunteers are still needed to stand with the kettles across town. In order to help the Salvation Army reach its goal of $107,000, Mayor Rob Burton will be supporting a kettle on Saturday, Nov. 28 from 1-4 p.m. at Oakville Place. Ward 3 Councillor Cathy Duddeck will follow on Friday, Dec. 4 at the LCBO Royal Treatment Pet Grooming 1380 Speers Rd Oakville Lisa F airweather- owner at Third Line and Rebecca Street from 4-7 p.m. The annual Kettle Drive, the Salvation Army's largest fundraiser runs from now to Dec. 24. The volunteer opportunity is a chance for individuals, families, community groups and students who need to accumulate community service hours. Kettles are operating at Oakville Place, on both the upper and lower levels, Hopedale Mall, Superstore, Wal-Mart and four LCBO locations. Hours vary depending on the operating time of the various locations, but are generally from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. No donations can be collected at a kettle that does not have supervision, so the Salvation Army relies on volunteers to do the job. The Salvation Army in Oakville is located at 1225 Rebecca St. It is a community church that numbers about 50 in its congregation. As outreach to the church, the Salvation Army maintains many community programs to assist those in need including the Lighthouse Shelter, a food bank, a Christmas Toy Depot, a holiday fellowship dinner and Christmas hampers.
