Speed skaters looking sharp The Oakville Speed Skating Club continues to be heavily represented at competitions across the province. Oakville sent 30-plus skaters to two recent Western Regional Ability Meets and qualified 40 for an Ontario Cup series elite competition. The Speedsters have also won plenty of medals at those meets. Rachel Van Gemert, Brett Sullivan and Sean Stewart won gold at the Western ability meet in Clarington, with Matheiu Masaro adding a bronze. Susan Chang, Colin Skov, David Watson and Masaro claimed gold at the other Western ability meet in Brampton, where Zuban Khan earned silver and Daniel Nelson, Joshua Whibbs and Christopher Gemmell collected bronze. At the Ontario Cup meet, Anaka Will-Dryden and Sean McAnuff won gold while Nicholas Kothleitner took silver. Erin Heidecker, Joshua Sullivan, Ben Heidecker, Seiogi Yi and Emma Hobson qualified for the Super Finals by finishing in the top six of their divisions, and Katie Quesnelle and Stewart finished first in their relay groups. Oakville skaters also participated in a recent meet in Markahm, where the club's relay team of Erin Stewart, Taylor Amos, Emma Hobson and Natalie Bilokrely won gold. Individually, Hobson won a gold, Julia Kennific earned silver and Taylor Amos took bronze. Oakville Speed Skating Club will host its own regional meet Sunday, Jan. 17 at River Oaks Recreation Centre. Skaters from across southern Ontario and the northern United States will participate in the meet, which will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. 19 · Thursday, December 17, 2009 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville MINOR FOOTBALL OAKVILLE TITANS REGISTRATION Don't Miss The England not sending a team this year Continued from page 18 trip otherwise," he said. The Russian squad, which will compete in the AAA division, won't be the only overseas flavour at this year's tournament. Two teams from Denmark and a club from Finland will compete in the minor midget AA division, while a Swedish entry will participate in the minor midget A division. England is not sending a team this year, however, for the first time since 2005. "They found the economy a little tough and backed out," Millichamp said, "but they asked us to keep their options open for future years." The tournament will run from Dec. 27-30, with games at every arena in town. Oakville Rangers teams won five of the 14 divisions at last year's event. Organizers are still looking for billets to accommodate the international teams and volunteers to help run this month's tournament, which raises money for the town's rep hockey program.
