www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, December 18, 2009 · 34 Singer has engagements in London, Paris in new year Continued from page 33 Curry pursued music back at Western before heading overseas, where he studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London Royal Schools Opera, Royal College of Music and the National Opera Studio. He's since starred in many roles over the years on stages across Europe, in both operas and operettas. Curry said he isn't an elitist when it comes to choosing his favourite of the two music genres. "I don't pick productions for money, there's a lot of ways to sell out in this business, so really I like doing interesting work," he said. "I disagree with anyone who would say operetta is a lower form. It requires an incredible skill set and for some reason some people think it isn't as technically demanding, which isn't correct." One of the highlights of his career to date is appearing as Stathis Borans in Howard Shore's world premiere of The Fly, directed by David Cronenberg and conducted by the brilliant Placido Domingo in Paris. "Doing The Fly was a heck of a thing and a big media circus," he said. "The Fly is a piece of pop culture and the attention I got was great." Curry moved back to Canada last year as a favour to his wife Anita, who wanted to settle down in their native country to raise their two children, William, 5, and Emma, 3. They chose Vancouver for its mild climate, slower pace of life and plethora of outdoor activities. However, Curry will be spending a lot of time in Europe this coming year. He's been cast in A Little Night Music at Theatre de Chatelet in Paris in January and February, and will be performing in concerts at the Royal Festival Hall and Birmingham Symphony Hall in London in March. He said he likes what he does for a living, but admits it isn't easy being a professional singer. "The travelling is hard, being away from family and my kids," he said. "You're always somewhere. It is also not an easy business in general. There's lot of politics and (inconsiderate) people. There's lots of ups and downs."
