Vol. 52 No. 154 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2009 40 Pages $1.00 (plus GST) Thousands cheer Olympic torch relay By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Thousands turned out for the event -- lining the streets, donning their woolies and cheering their family, friends and neighbours lucky enough to be bearing the torch through town. "It was so incredible to relay the Torch at home in Oakville today, made even sweeter running around the Burloak Canoe Club portaging a kayak, and torching off to John Wood, 1976 Olympic Silver Medalist in C1 500m (and a Pan Am bronze in sailing)," stated Adam van Koeverden who documented the day on his website. "Thanks to everyone who joined us in Oakville for the relay," he said. Many Oakville residents were indeed lucky enough to bear the torch either through Oakville or elsewhere -- some closer to home than others -- and still others have yet to have the honour. The Olympic torch, having passed through town Dec. 19, is en route back to Vancouver where it will open the Winter Games Feb. 12, 2010. By then, it will have passed through more than 1,000 Canadian communities and come within reach of 90 per cent of Canada's population. Here in Oakville, the torch made its way into town mid-Saturday afternoon. It wound its way along Lakeshore to the Burloak Canoe Club and then farther along Lakeshore to Dorval Drive before drawing to a close at Mary Street. Ready with flags, youths lined Lakeshore Road anticipating the arrival of the torch. Amongst them was the Ross family -- Kyle LINDSEY RYDER / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER TORCH FAN: Katie Bowie's smile showed her Canadian pride. Ross, Elissa Christie, Les and Kathleen Ross -- who were not only out to cheer for the relay and torchbearers, but whose Christmas present to themselves is a trip to Vancouver in February for the 2010 Olympics. Rhona Wurtele Gillis and her twin sister, Rhoda Wurtele Eaves, both 87, were in town as former Olympic athletes who participated in the Games in 1948, to relive the excitement of the Olympics as they carried the torch high through the streets in Oakville. As crowds of cheering supporters packed Lakeshore Road, the twins who are heroes of Canada's women's downhill skiing history, MICHAEL IVANIN / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER SHINING BRIGHTLY: Adam van Koeverden carried the Olympic torch and his kayak at the Burloak Canoe Club during the Oakville portion of the Olympic Torch Relay on Saturday. The Olympic gold medalist had planned to carry the torch in his kayak along Sixteen-Mile Creek, but that was changed when the creek surface froze.
