Vol. 52 No. 155 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" SATURDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2009 OMB power plant ruling appealed By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Energy giant TransCanada took this simple strategy to heart Tuesday, announcing that it will appeal a recent decision by the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) to uphold a special interim control bylaw. The action is being taken because the bylaw restricts TransCanada's ability to build a 900-megawatt gasfired power plant on the Ford-owned lands of 1500 Royal Windsor Dr. Passed by the Town of Oakville in March, the interim control bylaw drew attention from both TransCanada and Ford of Canada because it restricts the construction or expansion of power plants with a capacity greater than 10megawatts until the Town is able to complete a detailed study determining what Oakville lands can best accommodate such power plants. Facing the possibility construction of the 900-megawatt gas-fired power plant could not begin until the bylaw expires on March 30, 2010, Ford of Canada and TransCanada appealed the bylaw to the OMB. Canada's largest polar bear dip -- the Courage Brothers Polar Bear Dip -- will mark its 25th anniversary Jan. 1 at Coronation Park. "I feel 25 years old when I come out of the water," said Todd Courage, who co-founded Canada's largest Polar Bear Dip with his brother Trent Courage 25 years ago. "This is our fountain of youth," agreed Trent. Both grimace, just a little, when they admit they are somewhat older than 25 these days. Both also avoided shivering as they stood in Coronation Park clad in bathrobes, boxers and tshirts after taking a pre-dip in Lake Ontario on Monday, Dec. 21 -- the first day of winter. It was what has become an annual preview for the Jan. 1 Courage Brothers Polar Bear Dip on CITY-TV with Jennifer Valentyne.
