www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, January 1, 2010 · 16 Comedy Night benefit for Cambodian Habitat project Habitat for Humanity is calling on area residents to laugh for a good cause. The charity organization, which builds homes for the less fortunate, is holding a special Comedy Night/Dance Party Fundraiser on Friday, Jan. 22, at Burlington's Club 54. The purpose of the event is to raise around $3,500 needed to help fund a Habitat for Humanity project taking place in the Siem Reap area of Cambodia. Cambodia endured considerable tragedy during the 20th century with casualties received during the nearby Vietnam War giving way to millions murdered when Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge took power in 1975. Further warfare gripped Cambodia when Vietnam invaded to destroy the Khmer Rouge in 1978 with holdouts from the Khmer Rouge regime continuing to wage war against the Cambodian government until 1999. These 30 years of war have left many Cambodians in need, which is why the Habitat for Humanity project is so important, noted Comedy Night/Dance Party Organizer Jamesin Rossborough, 26. "We're lucky. We're really lucky to have what we have and anything can happen to anybody at any point in time that can change that," she said. "I have empathy for people, especially people overseas in places like Cambodia because they just don't have what we have in Canada." In addition to funding the project, the money raised during the Comedy Night/Dance Party will allow Rossborough to stay in Cambodia for two weeks, beginning May 1, where she will join 12 other Habitat for Humanity volunteers in helping to build a small subdivision. Cambodian builders will assist this project. Rossborough, a resident of Burlington who currently works as an advertising and marketing representative with the Oakville Beaver, has worked as a door-to-door canvasser for Habitat for Humanity. To date she has collected $500 for the Cambodia project. Rossborough's interest in the human condition extends beyond Habitat for Humanity as she will soon begin taking a course in human rights and equity at York University. The Comedy Night/Dance Party, which will be hosted by renowned comedian Ben Guyatt, begins at 8:30 p.m., although doors open at 8 p.m.Club 54 is located at 3345 Harvester Rd. Tickets cost $15 and can be obtained by calling Rossborough at 905-541-7844. Donations can also be made at www.canadahelps.org, click on giving pages and then type Rossborough's name in the search engine. Thank y f another successful you for year.
