Created by ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation in 1999, Family Literacy Day is a national initiative that promotes the importance of reading and learning together as a family. This year join Oakville Public Library to celebrate Family Literacy Day by participating in some free dropin Sing-a-long Family Storytimes at the following branches on Wednesday, Jan. 27: · Central Branch -- 9:45 a.m. · Glen Abbey Branch -- 10:30 a.m. · Woodside Branch -- 10:30 a.m. · White Oaks Branch -- 6 p.m. · Iroquois Ridge Branch -- 7 p.m. Each storytime will offer lots of singing along with the A usual rhymes and stories. These fun and family orientated sing-a-longs align with ABC Canada's Sing for Literacy theme and there is an added bonus. Every family attending will be given a free copy of a Robert Munsch story to read aloud together during the storytime, which they will get to keep. Families who participate will also get the chance to win prize baskets containing literacy materials by random draw, but you have to join us on Jan. 27 to win. A visit to the Oakville Public Library offers you great activity ideas for your family and many ways to participate in the joy of learning in a relaxed and fun environment. Your family can take part in one of our scheduled children's programs, pop into your local branch to discover our collections of books, DVDs and audio books or grab a Kids Book Pack to take home. Our Kids Book Packs have recently been redesigned with convenience for busy families in mind. Each backpack contains 10 pre-selected children's assorted picture books, plus a printed parent guide. There are also Kids Book Packs for varying levels of readers so you are sure to find something for the little reader in your family. However you celebrate Family Literacy Day this year, take some time to enjoy reading together as a family. -- Submitted by the Oakville Public Library Gala to benefit Halton Trauma Centre Tickets are now available for the Halton Trauma Centre's 11th annual Gala for Hope that will take place Saturday, Feb. 6. The event will be held at Le Dome Banquet Hall at 1173 North Service Rd. E. Last year, the gala raised $40,000. The Halton Trauma Centre raises hundreds of thousands of dollars to provide prevention, assessment and treatment services for children/adolescents and families affected by child abuse. Over the years, gala guests have included wellknown personalities such as Ken Dryden, Vince McMann, Sheldon Kennedy, Donovan Bailey, Dan Ferrone, Tom Fergus, Larry Cain and Paul Henderson. This year's event will include door prizes and both a live and a silent auction. Tickets cost $100/person and include hors d'oeuvres, a four-course meal and entertainment.
