It is also wholly undemocratic. If there is public outrage, it should be about this. Only after prorogation of Parliament could the committees of the Commons and Senate be reconstituted. The Liberals will then lose their majority control of these committees and unaccountable senators will no longer be able to overrule the will of Parliament. Five independent senators will hold the balance of power in the Senate. We will no doubt be able to get far more done for the people of Canada. Prorogation will delay Parliament by only 22 sitting days, with no delay whatsoever in imple- menting the government's Economic Action Plan to address the recession, or implementing any of the 30 bills passed in the last session. Prorogation is a normal parliamentary tool, used by former Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chrétien four times with little media criticism. In this case, it will facilitate the end of the undemocratic actions of the Senate, allowing more bills to be passed. It will also give the government time to consult with the voters and plan for a new direction and budget for 2010. OAKVILLE MP TERENCE H. YOUNG Warm Up The New Year With A Modern Design Harper's comments offensive Continued from page 6 adjournment of Parliament. Prime Minister Harper has arbitrarily silenced the voice of the opposition. Debate ends and the public's window into the operation of our government has been shuttered. From now until March 3, an imperialistic prime minister will have a free hand to remove funding for ecumenical organizations, fire whistle blowers and dismantle gun laws. Canada used to be known around the world as a peacekeeper, a country that worked to nurture peace and avoided taking sides, a society that would never participate in the occupation of a foreign country or condone the torture of its people. The brave decision of the Liberal government to defy the United States and criticize the invasion of Iraq will stand as a historic moment in our history. Outside of Canada, the world's impression of Canada is changing. We thumb our noses at environmental efforts at the Copenhagen Conference. We refuse to answer legitimate questions about whether Canada had knowledge of, or facilitated the torture of, detainees. The Prime Minister has even suggested that Canadians aren't really concerned about allegations that the government was involved in a cover-up over the abuse of Afghan detainees. The suggestion that human rights are not a priority for Canadians is utterly offensive. Most hypocritical is the fact that we endeavour to bring democracy to other countries, while stamping out dissension in our own government by proroguing Parliament. What is happening to our country that once garnered respect from around the world?
