www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, January 20, 2010 · 10 Abbey Park students raising money for Haitian earthquake victims In the aftermath of last week's earthquake in Haiti, Abbey Park High School's Interact and Young Women in Leadership clubs are spearheading a fundraiser to raise money for emergency relief. In a span of 24 hours, the student clubs collected almost $800 for relief through the Canadian Red Cross. "Our students feel it is so important to help those affected by this disaster. Since Thursday, we have set up a booth in our school foyer to update students on news of the earthquake and collect donations during lunch. Students are also going around to individual classes to discuss this disaster and collect donations. The government also has now offered a dollarfor-dollar matching program until Feb. 12, which encourages our community to get involved and donate during this brief period of time to double their impact," said Grade 12 student Vivian Leung. "We are hoping to share this initiative with our community and motivate fellow high school students to also take action despite exams beginning this Friday," said Leung. At Abbey Park, students are being encouraged to get involved in the following ways: · bring in spare change · speak with parents, family and friends about this initiative and collect donations for the school's `water bottle' donation bin. If donors want a tax receipt, write down their name, address and amount donated and place it in the water bottle. Address cheques to Abbey Park High School and memo Haiti Earthquake Fund. · The World Issues Class is visiting classes to speak about issues related to this disaster and collect change this week · The Muslim Students' Association is selling Tshirts to raise fund. · If you would like to volunteer or get involved in the school's fundraising drive, drop by the donation table and speak with volunteers. · Donate in the school's main office or at the fundraising table in the main foyer.
