Order of Canada for top health care professional Jeff Lozon of Oakville has been named to the Order of Canada. He is among 32 recipients announced recently by Governor General Michaëlle Jean. Lozon is considered one of Canada's leading health care professionals. He was named to the Order of Canada for innovative and sustained leadership in health care management and commitment to advancing health care and services. Lozon was president and CEO of Toronto's St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto for 17 years -- a time during which he led the transformation of the hospital from being one in financial crisis to having the reputation as one of the most efficient in the country. He also managed St. Mike's integration with Wellesley Central Hospital. While managing that integration, Lozon was, from 1999-2000, seconded to serve as the deputy minister of health and long-term care for Ontario. In 2006, he was appointed by the Prime Minister to serve as chair of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer. "I've worked in health care for the past 31 years and helping to making a difference in people's lives has been a truly rewarding experience," said Lozon. His hobbies include golf, reading and cooking. Lozon holds an honorary doctor of civil laws from Bishops University, has been an associate professor at the University of Toronto and a board member at the University of Guelph. While Lozon has shied away from the description of himself as Canada top health care executive he had admitted that he knows his way around finances and likes big challenges. Prior to coming to Toronto, Lozon was president and CEO of the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta -- Canada's largest specialty rehabilitation referral centre. Prior to that he was executive director of Manitoba Health Organizations Inc. in Winnipeg, Manitoba; director of Medical Services then Outpatient Services at the University of Alberta Hospital and a financial policy analyst at Ontario's Kingston General Hospital. Lozon, who has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Guelph, a Masters in Health Administration from the University of Alberta and the Honourary Doctor of Civil Laws from Bishops University, said he has never considered a career as a doctor.
