21 · Friday, January 29, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Fundraiser to back Oakville doctor in Haiti The devastation in Haiti has inspired a group of Oakville residents to hold a fundraiser to rebuild a children's hospital and honour the contributions to that country of Oakville doctor John Yates. The fundraising event will feature Mississauga band Still Garage. It will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 8 p.m. at The Firehall, 2441 Lakeshore Rd. W. in Bronte. Yates made his first trip to Haiti in 1978 -- one that inspired him to pursue a career in medicine. He has continued working in the country and is now senior project officer for International Child Care Canada (ICC). ICC has been operating in Haiti for more than 40 years and is the largest non-governmental organization in the country. Along with managing Haiti's TB program, a maternal health program and 175 health clinics, ICC also operates Grace Children's Hospital, which Yates helped establish. Yates departed Haiti hours before the earthquake hit on Jan. 12 and has since returned to help. This week, Yates, his wife, Sandy and their children, have been in Haiti. Yates has learned Grace Children's Hospital sustained severe structural damage and will have to be torn down and rebuilt. Upon hearing of the plight of the hospital, Oakville resident Krista Smith began planning a fundraiser. "I feel it is important to recognize the wonderful work that Dr. Yates is doing in Haiti, and with the Canadian government matching donations dollar for dollar, I think we can make a valuable contribution to the rebuilding efforts," said Smith. The Oakville Haiti Relief event is being sponsored by Blair Mackey and Peter McCormick of Royal LePage Realty. Tickets to the fundraiser for Haiti cost $15 and are available by calling the Firehall at 905-827-4445. For more information on ICC or Yates' efforts, visit www.internationalchildcare.org. Black History celebrations begin Black History Month will be kicked off by the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH) Thursday, Feb. 4 at Oakville Town Hall. From 6:30 to 8 p.m., residents can take in the official opening of Beyond the Rhythm art exhibit.
