www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, January 29, 2010 · 32 Athletiques' Sanchez sets national Masters record in weight throw It didn't take long for Michelle Baptie Sanchez to become the first member of Athletiques International to set a provincial record in 2010. In fact, the 41-year-old Sanchez set a national Masters record as well, recording a 5.75-metre distance in the 20-pound weight throw at a Masters mini-meet earlier this month at York University. Sanchez's feat was only one of several impressive performances by Athletiques International members in January. Sixteen-year-old Claire Segeren and 15year-old Rachel Bronzovich gave the Athletiques a one-two finish in the youth girls' 800-metre run at a York meet. Segeren crossed the line first in a time of 2:28.68 -- also a meet record -- while Bronzovich followed in 2:31.47. Alyssa McGraw set a personal record in the youth 200m, finishing in 27.52s to place 10th. Sura Yekka, who recently turned 13, surprised many by reaching the 60-metre final. Competing against runners as much as four years older than her, Yekka posted times of 8.32 seconds, 8.20s and 8.21s in the heats, semifinal and final to finish sixth. Yekka competed against her own age group the following day, setting a personal and meet record to win the 400m with a time of 1:01.24. She then added another personal and meet record while winning the 800m, crossing the line in 2:32.16. Yekka, Segeren, McGraw and Bronzovich will compete in the Ontario Indoor Legion Championships this weekend at York, along with Krysia Brudnicki, Katherine Slattery, Fatima Ammor and John Breeson. Atom Vytis girls turn tables on Brantford Caroline Szustak scored 12 points, Gen Murray hit two key jump shots and Julia Knez and Kirsten MacLeod provided tenacious defence, helping the Oakville atom girls' Vytis defeat Brantford CYO 34-28 in the championship game of a basketball tournament last weekend in Ancaster. The Vytis' win in the final avenged a 26-21 loss to Brantford in preliminary-round play. Szustak led Oakville with 14 points in that game. In other games at the tournament, Oakville defeated Dundas Dynamo 39-21 and London CYO 58-20. Szustak scored 46 points combined in the two games and was named the tournament's top offensive player. Amanda Coughlin contributed six points against London.
