Survey says readers like community newspapers TransCanada hosts Community newspapers have a strong and healthy readership, according to results of a new survey. The Canadian Community Newspaper Database Corporation (ComBase) released this week the results of its 2008-2009 study, in which readership data was measured for 218 markets across the country. Overall, community newspapers have a "strong" 74 per cent readership, according to a Combase news release. Specifically, readership is highest among affluent Canadians (for example, household income that is more than $75,000) and baby boomers at 78 per cent. Those groups are followed by adults with children (77 per cent), women and homeowners (76 per cent) and university-educated adults (74 per cent). "Community newspapers have long been the publication of choice for residents wanting a complete local news package," said David Harvey, regional general manager of Halton division for Metroland West Media Group that includes the Oakville Beaver. "From strong, award-winning stories to local advertising and flyers, community newspapers provide content that is not available anywhere else. These numbers reflect our overall strength in the marketplace."
