Athletiques runner sets provincial U14 record Tom Fergus Mark O'Donnell Dick Grimm John Gilbert Bob MacKinnon Athletiques International runner Sura Yekka continues to get faster. The 13-year-old finished second in the 400-metre run at last weekend's Legion Indoor Championships at York University, crossing the line in a personal-best time of 58.34 seconds. Yekka's time also set a new provincial record for under-14 girls, eclipsing the previous mark of 58.59 seconds set by Patricia Mayers of Oshawa in 1998. It was also nearly three seconds better than her previous personal best, set at another meet last month. "There was no doubt that she was going to go under 60 seconds, but whether she went under the record depended on how aggressively she ran the race," said Bruce Burton, Yekka's coach. "So we sent her after the top seed." Christian Brennan, a 15-year-old Burlington resident, was the top seed. Brennan needed a personalbest time of her own to edge out Yekka. Yekka wasn't the only Athletiques member to win a medal or set a personal best at the Legion meet. Rachel Bronzovich accomplished both, placing third in the 15-under girls' 800m with a time of 2:28.10. She also set a personal record in the 400m, placing fifth with a time of 1:02.42. Stephanie Guhl won bronze in the 15-under girls' shot put with a personal-best heave of 6.25 metres. Claire Segeren earned bronze in the 17-under girls' 800m, finishing ih 2:34.50. Krysia Brudnicki came fifth in the 15-under girls' 3,000m with a personal-best time of 13:03.00. Alyssa McGraw, 14, was eighth in the 200m in 27.82 seconds. 25 · Thursday, February 11, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Hall welcomes new members tonight The Oakville Sports Hall of Fame will officially induct six new members at a banquet tonight (Thursday) at Oakville Conference and Banquet Centre.
