But when you consider that with each new model Hyundai delivers more upscale styling, improved fit and finish, increased reliability and more power with better fuel economy, it's no wonder they're selling so many cars in Canada and around the world. The Santa Fe crossover has been a hit with consumers, and for 2010, it gets some major updates. These include refreshed styling, more standard technology and two new engine choices that include a more powerful V6 and a fuel-efficient four, replacing last generation's 2.7-litre and 3.3-litre V6 engines. The Santa Fe is a little bigger and heavier than compact crossovers like the Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue and Honda CR-V, yet is a little smaller than their larger siblings Highlander, Crosstour, and Murano. Call it a large compact or small mid-size. In any case, I was intrigued by the fourbanger Santa Fe. Would the savings in fuel and purchase price offset any potential for lackluster performance or would I be pleasantly surprised? We'll get to that shortly... The Santa Fe's exterior has come a long way since the early part of the decade and now looks more premium than entry level. The 2009 model has been updated with a new body-colour grille with chrome accents, new combination wrap-around projector-beam headlamps and some nicely integrated fog lights (on the V6 only). In back, the new rear fascia includes redesigned combination tail lamps. Standard 17-inch alloys (18-inch on some V6 models) complement the styling tweaks. Open the doors and both driver and passengers are treated to an interior that looks surprisingly upscale, even in the 2.4 GL, the single four-cylinder trim level that starts at $25,999 ($27,499 with automatic). Cloth seats are upholstered in an attractive and comfortable material; doors and dash include a pleasing combination of fabric inserts, metallic trim, textured plastics and abundant wood-grain trim. The standard tilt/telescopic steering wheel includes audio and cruise controls, as well as standard-equipped Bluetooth phone interface a feature that with today's new cell phone laws is now pretty much indispensable. Other standard features on the base vehicle include keyless entry with power locks and windows, air conditioning, 120-watt six speaker AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with iPod/USB input, and 12v power outlets for front and rear seat passengers, and in the cargo area. Move up to a V6 and there are plenty of upgrades that include leather, heated and power adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, upgraded audio system, touchscreen navigation system with rearview camera and more. From the 2.4 GL, there's a $1,500 price bump to get into the base V6 model the 3.5 GL FWD at $28,999. It can also be had in allwheel drive, or you can move up to the 3.5 GL Sport (FWD or AWD), 3.5 Limited and lastly the 3.5 Limited with Navigation, which starts at $37,599. All V6 models get a six-speed automatic with Shiftronic manual shifter. This transmission also came with my four-cylinder tester, which otherwise would get a six-speed manual. No matter which Santa Fe you choose, passengers are treated to abundant knee and headroom in back, on seats that are comfortable and supportive.
