TAB juniors fall in Division 2 final By Kevin Nagel METROLAND WEST MEDIA GROUP 25 · Wednesday, February 24, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com If it works once, keep doing it. Corpus Christi coach Rob Biturajac didn't say it, but he followed the old coaching adage in yesterday's (Tuesday's) Halton Division 2 junior boys' high school basketball championship game. His Longhorns applied relentless pressure, both offensively and defensively, from the opening tip-off, allowing only one field goal in each of the first two quarters while scoring 28 on the way to 50-31 victory over the T.A. Blakelock Tigers at Sheridan College. "Yes, we did put pressure on them the first time we played them (a 50-37 win in December), too," said Biturajac, whose team led 20-5 after one quarter. "We put in a lot of hard work throughout the season to get this far." With the exception of sixth-man Justin Saddlemeyer, the scoring for the Longhorns was distributed equally. The Grade 9 sharpshooter scored 13 points, 10 in the first quarter after sitting out the first couple of minutes. Blakelock coach Ross Summner hesitated when asked why his Tigers started so slowly. "We've had a very competitive season but first quarters have been trouble for us all year," he said. "We usually manage to come back but against a strong team like Corpus Christi, it's hard to do that." Blakelock's star point guard Lazar Kojovic, asked the same question, was blunt. "In the first quarter we were intimidated by a bigger, stronger team that dominated the boards," he said. "We picked it up in the second and third, though." Kojovic, who moves up to senior next year, scored 16 points. "That's low for him," said Summner. "He's usually in the 20-25 range. He's very strong. He's one of seven moving up to senior." Miami Kangu, another Corpus Christi player with another year of junior, scored eight points, as did Kyle Schulhauser. Tommy Hong scored all seven of his points for the Tigers in the fourth quarter, four coming on two steals within 10 seconds of each other, and the other three with a shot from beyond the three-point line. Buoyed by the fact Blakelock basically stayed even with the Longhorns in the second half (the Tigers scored 21 of the 43 points) and his team has six Grade 9 players coming back, Summner was enthusiastic about next season. His counterpart at Corpus Christi, Biturajac, meanwhile, is hoping the seniors and juniors will move up to Division 1 play next season as the second-year school starts to reach normal numbers in population. The Blakelock/Corpus Christi junior Division 2 clash was just one of four Halton basketball finals contested yesterday at Sheridan. See tomorrow's (Thursday's) edition of The Oakville Beaver for coverage of the senior Division 2 game between King's Christian Collegiate and Corpus Christi and the senior Division 1 showdown between Loyola and Nelson. Blakelock's Lazar Kojovic (right) during yesterday's Halton high school junior boys' basketball Division 2 final at Sheridan College. Kojovic's defence and 16 points weren't enough for the Tigers, however, as Blakelock fell 5031.
