Chartered buses will shuttle protesters to Queen's Park Continued from page 1 13 · Friday, February 26, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com To this end, they have chartered enough buses to carry 2,000 people from Oakville and Clarkson to the legislative building and back again. "There have been other plants built, but none of them fought with the caliber of what we have in Oakville and Mississauga," said Doug MacKenzie, C4CA president. "If we can't stop it, nothing can." Student support for the rally is also growing with around 200 Oakville Trafalgar High School students expected to attend, said Frank Clegg, C4CA representative. Support for the rally could also be seen in letters sent home to parents of Fern Hill School students. In the letter, Fern Hill Directors Joanne McLean and Wendy Derrick stated that while the school has a policy against becoming involved in issues with a political focus, they would provide information for parents to use as they saw fit. This information included details about the rally and contact information for a Fern Hill parent, involved with C4CA, who had volunteered to make transportation arrangements for Fern Hill families interested in attending the rally. "We realize that lessons in social issues can be taught in many different ways, both inside and outside the school environment and we understand if parents wish to take their children out of school to attend the rally on March 2," the letter concluded. Despite the Canada Russia Olympic Hockey game keeping many at home during C4CA's Wednesday meeting, around 70 people were still in attendance to learn about the power plant and what is being done to stop it. When it came his turn to speak, Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn pointed out that size will definitely matter on the day of the Queen's Park Rally. "I need you down at Queen's Park on Tuesday. It's that simple," said Flynn. "If I go in and tell the premier this is a huge issue and he looks out his window and sees 30 people on the steps of Queen's Park, he's going to look at me and say, `Flynn, it's not a big deal.' But if he looks out that window and sees 1,000 people that's going to get his attention. That's going to tell him the people in this community really really care." Oakville MP Terence Young, Halton MPP Ted Chudleigh, as well as Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and several councillors, echoed these sentiments during the meeting. Burton said he and members of council would be attending the rally. "The most important thing I can say as the elected leader of the entire town is that your town needs you there. Be there please," said Burton. "When our community is united and we work hard together with all of our creativity and our imagination there is no direction for our town except onward and upward. There is no opponent we cannot overcome. You have a situation here where your political leaders are united in community interest and not divided by party lines." The rally will begin at noon with C4CA buses leaving for Queen's Park at 10:30 a.m. and returning by 2 p.m. Those planning on taking such a bus can register to do so at www.c4ca.org/rally-onmarch-2.
