Oakville took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series Wednesday with a 5-2 victory in Aurora. Mark Bennett scored twice for the Blades, who also got goals from Steven Hickey, Kyle Blaney and Dustin Alcock. Former Tiger Thomas Evans contributed three assists and Ryan Murphy had two helpers. Daniel Savelli earned the victory in net. David Morley and Nick Vangog had the Aurora markers. Puck drop for Game 3 tonight at Joshua's Creek is 7:30. The local girls' hockey squad earned its fifth tournament medal of the year recently in London, winning the championship at the London Devilettes tournament. Madeline Hayes' shootout goal lifted Oakville to victory over the Ancaster Avalanche in the gold-medal game. The two teams played to a 2-2 draw through regulation and overtime before Hayes and Madeline Osgarby scored for the Hornets in the shootout. Oakville netminder Kaitlyn Booth clinched the win by stopping Ancaster's final attempt in the shootout. The Hornets also needed dramatics in the tournament semifinal. Jaime Brioux scored in the final minute of double overtime to give Oakville a 2-1 victory over the Woodstock Wildcats, a team that had recently moved up from the atom C division after going 22-0 and outscoring its opposition 123-8. The gold in London was Oakville's second of the year, the other coming in Napanee. The Hornets also earned silver medals in Oshawa, Whitby and Waterloo. Other members of the team are Esmee Jordan, Kate VanEeuwyk, Jennifer Dumont, Amanda Byj, Megan Rykhoff, Sydney Jackson, Erin Arsenault, Delaney Pritchard, Logan Hackett, Drew Gordon, Claire Mills and Julia McDonnell.
