Nelson downs Titans in Jr. AAAA final By Ryan Glassman SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER 49 · Friday, February 26, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Nelson Lords head coach Danielle Kennedy said her junior volleyball squad's only loss -- to Christ the King to wrap up the regular season Feb. 10 -- helped catapult her club to an eventual championship. Her squad won the Halton AAAA title after defeating the Holy Trinity Titans Wednesday at Sheridan College. Nelson won the best-of-three match with straight-set wins of 25-12 and 25-16. "It was good for us to have that loss going into the playoffs because they really needed to push," Kennedy said. "They needed to know they were capable of being beaten." After winning the opening match in 29 minutes, the Lords jumped to a 17-4 lead in the second game. Holy Trinity would get 10 of the next 13 points to cut the deficit to six before Nelson went on a 52 run to secure the victory. Titans head coach Melissa Olmstead noted her team couldn't mount any kind of comeback after giving up such large leads. "We let them get ahead early and struggled to make it up," she said. "Volleyball's a game of momentum and sometimes you can't get it back in time to rescue the match." "Our blocking hasn't been the best at times this year, but now all facets of our game are coming together," Stewart said. "What's most amazing is the depth of the team. We have club volleyball players who could start for most schools sitting on the bench, and I feel badly about that, but there's only so much playing time to go around." Setter Tory McCracken has been the club's MVP, often catching her big-hitting teammates off guard with some of her passes. Grade 11 student Maggie Darling has played mostly in the middle position but moved to the outside and Stewart estimated her kill rate has been over 80 per cent in recent matches. Meanwhile, the campaign is over for the Red Devils, who went 8-2 during the regular season. Peterson has substantial rebuilding to do, with four starters, including co-captains Ally Torrance and Lizzy Siklos, set to graduate.
