Signs illustrate residents' fears Continued from page 1 Another sign stating, `McGuinty, you know power plants kill people. Why?' showed the fear many have of an accident similar to the recent explosion at a 620megawatt, gas-fired power plant in Middletown, Connecticut. While C4CA chartered about 50 buses to get people to Queen's Park, a large turnout was by no means guaranteed. The number of people gathered at Oakville Place, one of the rally's designated pick up areas, was not that large in the moments leading up to the buses' departure time. "This will be a total waste of our time if there is only a few hundred (people)," said one rider. These fears, however, were soon put to rest when the buses approached Queen's Park and joined a long train of others, each waiting to deposit their cargo of protesters. C4CA President Doug MacKenzie was pleased by the turnout, which he said sat at about 2,500 registered attendants. These protesters heard from a number of speakers during the rally including Oakville resident and Vice Chair of the Toronto Argonauts Michael `Pinball' Clemons, who said this issue is deeply important to him even though he lives in north Oakville. "When I have a power plant that is going to be located 300 metres from a school, I have to believe that while my kids don't go to that particular school, I have to conduct myself as though my kids are going to that school, as well," he said. "I want to say to my government that I cheer for you and I want you to make great decisions. (Building a power plant) 300 metres from a school doesn't seem to be a great decision, is all I'm saying." Clemons said the number one purpose of a government is to promote safety and public order. This led to a massive cheering session in which Clemons' cheer of `safety' was met with the crowd's cheer of `first' to form a thunderous roar of `Safety first, safety first.' Oakville Mayor Rob Burton also provoked the crowd into a cheering session.
