Oakville (HomeSense/Winners Plaza) Dr. Errol Noronha I keep hearing about `Home Automation" but I don't know what it means, can you explain ? Q: A: Absolutely! Home automation is a broad term for having your home Greg Niblett Q: A: Are denture adhesive creams safe? Maybe. These denture adhesives are regulated in Canada as medical devices. They have chemical formulations that may contain Zinc as an ingredient. Chronic ingestion of Zinc can lead to Copper deficiency and this in an "established and increasingly recognized cause of neurologic disease", such as weakness and numbness or the of the extremities. This is from the March 2010 issue of the Ontario Dentist Journal where it sites cases of patients have experienced numbness and pain in extremities linked to excessive use of these adhesives and numerous references. So why use them at all? Well, for a person who has lost all their teeth, an initially well fitting denture will loosen over time as the bone and gums continually shrink due to lack of teeth. The adhesives will provide some stability (and are messy to use). But they can only provide temporary help and a refitted denture (relined or a new denture) is really needed to get the best fit. Sometimes this can be required fairly frequently. Sometimes the bone shrinks away so much a regular denture cannot be made to be worn comfortably even with denture adhesive. Today the best way to avoid all of the problems associated with dentures and their stability and potential risks from denture adhesives to have dental implants placed to hold a denture in place so that a person can chew with comfort and confidence. Great things start with a warm healthy smile! 905-338-0377 electronics, lighting, thermostat, and alarm systems work together with one main control device. What this means is that you can set your lights to come on at dusk and go off at dawn without ever needing to reprogram them. It can turn off the lights automatically when no one is in the room. If your bedroom is cool at night you can use the remote beside your bed to change the temperature, instead of having to walk to the main floor to change it at the actual thermostat. It means one remote control to use your home theatre. A home automation system can also send you an email or text message to let you know the kids got home from school safely. An example of what these systems can do when they work together is that your alarm system has a fire notification. When this goes off, your thermostat will turn off the fans so that smoke is not sent around the house, your lights will turn on to make it easy to see the exits, and the porch lights will flash so that first responders can find your home. The possibilities are limitless! Question: What is "lazy eye" or amblyopia Answer: Lazy eye or amblyopia refers to the eye that cannot see well but there is not any apparent disease. This may result from strabismus (which means the eyes don't align properly), farsightedness, extreme nearsightedness or infantile cataracts. The brain's visual circuitry is not completely formed until the age of 7, therefore amblyopia should be detected and treated early to prevent the condition from becoming permanent. Book and appointment with your optometrist to ensure your child has been screened for this. Have you had your eyes check lately?
