The Hawks defeated Hamilton's St. Mary's in four sets to earn a trip to the provincial AAA tournament. The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders also advanced to OFSAA by winning a playdown Tuesday (see page 27 for story). Chelsey Becker spent a week basking in a show of unbridled patriotism. Fortunate enough to score some tickets for the Olympics, Becker took in women's hockey games, speed skating and some medal ceremonies. Even walking down the streets of Vancouver, it was hard not to get caught up in the spirit as a country rallied behind its athletes as they earned a record medal haul. "It was incredible," the Grade 12 student said. "Everywhere you went, people just broke out into the national anthem." There has been no emotional letdown for Becker since she returned to school. Tuesday, she helped the Loyola Hawks qualify for the provincial high school girls' volleyball championship with a victory over Hamilton's St. Mary's Crusaders. The win came just a day after the Loyola boys' basketball team won its Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) qualifier. And, as the volleyball team was rallying for its four-set victory, both the Hawks boys' and girls' hockey teams were winning semifinal games to advance to today's (Thursday's) Halton finals, setting up the potential for an unprecedented sweep of the four major winter team sports. "Coming back here, it feels just like (the Olympics) at school," Becker said. "This has been such a great year for Loyola." It didn't start that way for the volleyball team. Injuries to starters Nicole Garcia, Marti Killeen and Paige Vukson forced the Hawks to shuffle the lineup and Loyola struggled to a 3-4 start. Then came the Ontario Catholic Classic, a 24-team tournament in the first week of February that brought together many of the province's best See Loyola page 28 With 37 Years of Experience, We Offer Summer Soccer at its Best 14 weeks of play* Includes end of season games Includes end of season games All age divisions for youth and adults are available (U4+) All age divisions for youth and adults are available (U4+) Registration is open from March 8 to the start of the season.
