Thanks to Matheson's goal in the 70th minute, Canada captured the Cyprus Women's Cup championship Wednesday with a 1-0 victory over New Zealand in Nicosia, Cyprus. "This result shows how far we've come just in the last year with Carolina," Matheson told the Canadian Press, referring to secondyear head coach Carolina Morace. "It's been a huge Diana Matheson jump. "If you look at our games last year, the way we played was so much different than it is now," the White Oaks grad continued. "We are starting to put into practice what Carolina is trying to get across. And that's the reason we're starting to get results." Canada finished the Cyprus Cup tournament undefeated with four wins, defeating Switzerland, England and South Africa before blanking New Zealand in the final. The team continues preparing for the 2010 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup in October, where two teams will qualify for next year's FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany. HITTING THE WALL: Christ the King Jaguars goalie Marcus Rees (in blue) stops Loyola's Ryan McGillivray (left) and Dave Doughty from close range during yesterday's Halton high school boys' hockey final at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. Rees and the Jaguars stifled the Loyola attack on the way to a 4-1 victory. NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER CTK clips Hawks in boys' hockey final By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR If the Loyola Hawks are going to get to the provincial high school boys' hockey championships, they'll have to do it the hard way. Loyola was denied its first-ever Halton boys' hockey title by the Christ the King Jaguars yesterday (Thursday), dropping a 4-1 decision to its Georgetown rivals in front of a massive crowd at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. In order to qualify for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) AAA/AAAA tournament, the Hawks will now need to win a Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (GHAC) challenge game Monday in Hamilton and then defeat Christ the King in the GHAC championship Wednesday. Even if the Hawks do manage to qualify for OFSAA, coach Larry Litzgus admitted losing the Halton final took a bit of the luster off an excellent season for his squad, which was 7-13 in the regular season. "This being our first time (in a Halton final) in the history of our school and the chance to finish first overall in all of Halton, this was our chance to do it," he said. "The good news is we have a young team. Half the team is Grade 11s and we have no super seniors. We'll be back next year, too." Loyola struggled to generate offense yesterday against the stingy Jaguars, who allowed a league-low 16 goals during the regular season. Christ the King also scored two back-breaking goals. The Jaguars' Justin Kaye scored with less than a second to go in the first period to give Christ the King a 1-0 lead, and Jags captain Dylan Hannan netted the eventual winSee Jags page 34
