"Dig deep and find them because they are out there and you only have to scratch the surface to find the heartbeat of Oakville," said Chris Mei, the emcee of the official launch of the ninth annual Oakville Community Spirit Awards last week at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. He said volunteers are the heartbeat of Oakville as they improve the lives of others. Nominations are open until Friday, April 23 at 4 p.m. and the awards ceremony will follow in June. Last year's Senior Award recipients Doug and Shirley Walmsley were present at the launch party. "The awards are good because they show what people are doing in the community," Shirley said. The Walmsleys are proud community supporters themselves. They are long-time volunteers at the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and their church. They are also blood donors. The awards are aimed to recognize individuals, businesses or organizations that participate and contribute in the community.
