New bylaw won't improve air quality Continued from page 6 7 · Wednesday, March 17, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Re Saf new 2.5 PM bylaw will cause one of the more stable auto sector manufacturers to consider other expensive options - we stand the risk that this will be driving yet more jobs and investment away from Oakville, yes causing residential taxes to go up further, at a time when a new hospital here is already making the tax burden high? As a resident of Oakville who loves this community, I am concerned we are heading down a very dangerous path destined to turn our town into one with third world electricity reliability with one of the highest municipal residential tax rates in Ontario -- all unnecessarily so. The facts as I see it are: · A power project is needed in the southwest GTA to keep the electricity system reliable. · The majority of 2.5 PM comes from residences and transportation and will not come from a new power project in Oakville. Let's work on the larger part of the problem first, not the smaller part. · Oakville's new 2.5 PM bylaw will do virtually nothing to improve air-quality, but is restrictive to new and existing businesses here. · To date, the vocal minority has been getting all of the attention. The silent majority needs to speak up to ensure there is balance in the discussions. A possible solution to the difficult situation we are getting into is to repeal the 2.5 PM bylaw, allow the TransCanada project to proceed and support Ford's reasonable applications. We need to act soon or the consequences to Oakville may be irreversible. My comments are personal and not attributed to my present or past employers.
