www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, March 19, 2010 · 18 Time to battle with books In the month of March, Oakville Public Library is gearing up to host its annual Battle of the Books with school teams from all over Oakville getting ready to compete. Each spring, the library welcomes many school teams to battle against each other, answering questions about books, which have been selected and set by library staff. Battle of the Books promotes an enthusiasm for reading and encourages team spirit and good sportsmanship. This exciting literary competition provides an excellent opportunity for Oakville Public Library to work with community schools to celebrate books and reading. Approximately 20 junior teams and 16 senior teams are already registered and participating in this year's battle. Battle of the Books will be held at Central Branch, 120 Navy St., and battle dates are as follows: · Senior Battle of the Books -- Monday, March 22 and Friday, March 26. · Junior Battle of the Books -- Tuesday, March 23 and Thursday, March 25. During battle week, four visiting authors will be speaking to the children and teams: Loris Lesynski, Mahtab Narsimhan, Jennifer Lanthier and Jan Thornhill. This is a great chance for youths to meet their favourite authors and hear the stories of each author and their inspirations. The teams that get through the rounds and make it to the Grand Battle will meet on Wednesday, April 14 (date to be confirmed), with the Regional Battle involving other Grand Battle winners will take place on Thursday, May 6 in Burlington (date to be confirmed).
