Blades' Guzzo headed to UMass VICTORIOUS VYTIS: The Oakville Vytis major midget girls #2 team won all five of its games at the recent Markham Unionville Minor Basketball Association Invitational Tournament. Oakville Blades forward Steven Guzzo will be headed to Massachusetts next fall. The St. Thomas Aquinas grad will play for the University of Massachusetts Minutemen's Division 1 hockey program next season. Guzzo, in his third year with the Blades, has been arguably the team's most complete player this season. He earned a career-high 70 points (including 29 goals) in 56 regular-season games. Guzzo missed nearly all of last season after suffering a concussion in his fourth game. He was a member of the Blades' Ontario Junior A Hockey League and Dudley Hewitt Cup championship team in 2007-08. Oakville's most difficult victory in the OBAsanctioned five-game round-robin tournament came against the Orillia Lakers. Alyssa Washington hit a three-pointer late in regulation to force overtime, where the Vytis prevailed 46-45. Oakville's other wins in the tournament came against the Burlington Skyhawks #2 (35-30), Ancaster Magic (40-28), Milton Stags (49-10) and Etobicoke Rams (49-16). The Vytis' Natalie Hirano was named tournament MVP. Other members of the team are Rebecca Flynn, Jennifer Sutton, Neha Sharma, Maria Grubisic, Claire Steckle, Christina Heytens, Nina Dabic and Beka McRae. Jeff McRae and Gord Hirano coach the team.
