The exhibit, titled Transitions, opens Saturday, March 27 and will be available until April 11. "She's probably most recognized for her abstract take on birch trees, but this exhibit is about an all-over Canadian landscape," said Joanna Tomal who co-owns the gallery and is its art director. The artist's paintings at the exhibit will feature visual changes in seasons often found on the Canadian landscape. Wallis uses an encaustic painting method. The medium dates as far back as the fifth century BC. It is the use of melted wax and oil mixed together. "Encaustic is actually the oldest method of painting," Tomal said. "We carry a few encaustic artists, but she's one of the best. It's been becoming popular in the last few years." In describing the artist's work, Tomal stated in a press release, "Susan has mastered this ancient medium and brought it forward to the modern day. Her work seems almost organic; from the natural texture and luminosity of wax to the earthy tones of her work and to the subject matter, which is always connected to nature." There will be an opening reception March 27 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the gallery and Wallis is expected to be present. The gallery is at 94 George St. in downtown Oakville.
