He said the calf of this right leg felt as if someone had taken a baseball bat to it. He was more worried about his memory at the time, but when he was driving he suddenly had to pull over when the pain in his leg became extreme. He was shaking and he couldn't get out of the car because his leg could not support him. The pain subsided after about 30 seconds, but the calf was still sensitive and painful. The next day, the situation was worse and he had to use a cane to get to his classes as walking was extremely painful. When the pain became unbearable, he went to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where a doctor called in a specialist and a group of interns to look at it. There was a fear that he had a blood clot that was cutting off the flow of blood to the muscle and the muscle was dying. However, when Percocet seemed to decrease the pain, it indicated this was not the problem. The painkiller got him through the next couple of months, but he still could not walk unassisted and was forced to get around in a wheelchair. It was suspected that he had micro tears all through the muscle and that the muscle had in fact been pulled away from the bone. Lin said facing the unknown was unbelievably frustrating. "We had no idea of what we were dealing with and what to expect. "To have him in a wheelchair and not to know how long or how quickly he could recover and no one really seemed to have an answer." The pain was less important to him than getting on with his life. Attacks became reduced to four or five times a day, even though the muscle was now indenting in the centre and seemed to be collapsing into itself. Chris's memory was coming back, but only in pieces. He could remember where something was, but he could not remember how it got there. He said it was as if he had "knowledge without any memory." He would remember something, but did not know how or when he came across that fact. For example, See Experience page 21
