Oakville students sweep regional science fair Oakville students took first, second and third place at the 50th annual Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF) in Hamilton last week. Nearly 400 students competed at the fair, and 70 projects were entered by Oakville students. Ian Coomes, a Grade 8 student at Appleby College took the Best-in-Fair Award. Second place went to Grade 12 student Vivian Leung from Abbey Park High School and third place went to Calvin Rieder, a Grade 7 student at Oakville Christian School. With the wins, the students, along with several others who fared well at the competition at McMaster University in Hamilton, will move on to either world or Canada-wide competitions. Heading to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in San Jose, California in May are: Leung, along with Kate Bauer from Hillfield Strathallan College, Wardah Nasir from Westmount and Lauren Sehdev from Hillfield Strathallan College. The other two Oakville winners, who are still in elementary school, will move onto the Canada-wide Science Fair at Trent University in Peterborough this May. In total, 16 top students who competed at BASEF will compete in the Canada-wide fair. The students will have all their expenses paid for when they head to the national and international competitions. There were also scholarships given out at BASEF. Coomes, 14, took the top prize for his project What's Growing on Your Uniform? He was inspired when he became sick with H1N1 and saw an ad urging people to cough into their sleeve. He thought about bacteria on school blazers that need to be dry-cleaned and learned that bacteria can grow on clothing. Leung, 17, took second place for her project Morphological and Functional Characterization of Lower Female Genital Epithelial Cell Cultures Grown in Different Conditions. She created a testing model that uses cells from various areas of the body and then applied the model to the reproductive tract of the female body to learn better how the HIV virus interacts with a specific barrier in the female reproductive tract. She found that her model produced more realistic results than other models currently being used. Rieder, 13, took third place for his project Water, Water, Everywhere, Nor Any Drop to Drink -- Atmospheric Water Condenser To Provide Pure Drinking Water. For the project he created four prototypes that could condense water from the atmosphere for drinking water. 9 · Thursday, April 1, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com HOPEDALE MALL 1515 Rebecca Street, Oakville QEW Bronte Rd. 3rd Line 4th Line Rebecca St. Lakeshore Rd.
