By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Fewer Oakville residents turned their lights off for 60 minutes during Earth Hour last Saturday compared to a year ago. According to Oakville Hydro, Oakville residents reduced their energy consumption by 1.7 per cent, or 2,851 kilowatt-hours. However, last year the town managed to reduce its energy consumption by a comparatively massive 13.3 per cent, which amounted to a savings of 22,233.73-kilowatt hours. The year before Oakville dropped its energy consumption by 8.2 per cent. In neighbouring Mississauga, power consumption was down by 6.9 per cent during the one-hour-long event Saturday night. But Oakville wasn't the only place where participation in the annual event dropped for Earth Hour. Ontario dropped its energy use by four per cent Saturday night, less than the six per cent it dropped last year and the five per cent the year before that. Even Toronto had a drop in participation this year. The provincial capital decreased its energy use by 10 per cent this year compared to the 15.1 per cent last year. Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 when more than two million people turned off their lights for one hour. Since then, the annual World Wildlife Fund-organized event has grown to include hundreds of millions of people around the globe in an initiative to take a stand against climate change.
