www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, April 2, 2010 · 28 Minor peewee Rangers get defensive to win OMHA title If it ain't broke, fix it anyway. That was Steve Horner's approach as his Oakville minor peewee AA Rangers prepared to face the powerful Barrie Colts in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association final. The Rangers had enjoyed tremendous success playing a wide-open style all year, losing only one regular-season game. But Horner felt a change to a more defensive philosophy was necessary if his squad was to defeat Barrie, the second-ranked team in Ontario, in the OMHA championship series. "We knew we'd have our hands full," said the Rangers' head coach. "Barrie was on par if not a stronger offensive team than we were." Horner and defensive coach Ed Martin sold the message to their team, and the players bought in. It paid off as the Rangers allowed only nine goals in five games against the Colts, claiming the first-to-sixpoints series 7-3 despite scoring only 13 goals themselves. "The boys believed in what we went out to do," said Horner. After the teams began the series with 3-2 wins on home ice, Oakville blanked the Colts 3-0 in Game 3 in Barrie. The teams played to a 2-2 draw in Game 4 before the Rangers clinched the title with a 3-2 win in Barrie. Oakville finished the year with an overall record of 55-8-5.
