Fencers win medals at provincial championships Several members of the Canadian Fencing Academy earned medals at the provincial championships recently in Kingston. Eleanor Harvey, Kirsten Ball, Andrew Hu, Jack Baldowski, Mark Zielinski and Kyle Foster all came away from the meet with medals around their neck. Harvey won gold in the junior women's foil division, adding a fifth place in women's foil. Ball claimed silver in women's epee. Hu, Baldowski, Zielinski and Foster teamed up to win bronze in the team epee event. Hu added an individual bronze in the men's epee. Other notable individual performances included Stephen Willson's fifth-place effort in the League of Champions (epee). In men's epee, Baldowski was eighth, Michael Deinhart placed 16th, Zielinski came 25th, Roman Jakubowski placed 28th (and 12th in the junior division) and Foster was 61st in the field of 61. Following provincials, Harvey competed at the world championships for cadets and juniors in Baku, Azerbaijan. Novice Hornets edge London in league final The Oakville novice A Hornets believed they could do it. Now they know for sure. Megan Harley's overtime goal lifted the Hornets to a 2-1 victory over the London Devilettes in the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League championship game recently. Harley picked up the puck in the defensive zone and skated up the ice before firing a shot over the right shoulder of the London goaltender, setting off a wild celebration by the Oakville players. "The coaching staff adopted the Olympic motto `I Believe' and that proved to be the difference in the end," said Hornets coach Dominick Hardy. Emily Wilson also scored in the final for Oakville, which reached the title game with a 3-0 blanking of the Etobicoke Dolphins in the semis. Other members of the squad are Julia Baumann, Rylee Davison, Andrea Fausto, Meghan Grouix, Isabelle Hardy, Hayley Lahn, Tara McInnis, Emmy Lou O'Neill, Hannah Rettinger, Alexandra Robertson, Chloe Saxton, Jenny Schwichtenberg, Ashley Taciuk, Catherine Trevors and Avery Vickers. Dave Wilson, Thom Harley and Greg Lahn also coach the team, and the trainers are Andrea Grouix and Janet Schwichtenberg.
