The annual cleanup, organized by the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights, will be held at 34 nature sites including trails, parks and waterways. "We want people to help take care of their own backyards and to beautify Oakville's green spaces by picking up garbage and litter from parks and trails," said Stephen Dankowich, executive director of the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights. "According to Earth Day Canada, we are told that this is the largest annual Earth Day cleanup in Canada," Dankowich said. "The citizens have really responded, just fantastically, to this event, which is now in its 19th year. It has grown from 28 participants in the first year to last year when we estimated that 2,200 people helped out." The goals of the Earth Week Clean Up have remained relatively unchanged for 19 years. "It's fairly similar to past years," Dankowich said. "We're very pleased that we have 92 sponsors of the event. We have 12 Oakville schools that are participating and we have 34 nature sites that will be attended to." According to the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights, four per cent of citizens participated in last year's event along with 3,000 students from local schools. People planning to attend Oakville's Earth Week Cleanup are suggested to wear work boots and bring their own pick-up sticks, rakes, wheelbarrows, brooms and shovels. The Oakville Earth Week Cleanup is one of many environmental events being held across town all week. Oakville's Earth Week will kick off with Halton's Eco Festival, held Saturday April 17.
