47 · Friday, April 9, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Facebook campaign draws international attention Continued from page 44 e-mail and said `What are we going to do about this?'" Weeks said. "It was like I could hear the sound of brakes screeching in my mind." Within hours, they had set up a Facebook page, inviting friends to join and show their support for Burns' Hall of Fame candidacy. By the time Weeks returned from a movie that night it had 100 members. "We just started using the skills we know to get the word out," said Perenack, who like Weeks, works in public relations. They sent an e-mail to Hockey Night in Canada and the page was mentioned between games by Tim Wharnsby and Scott Morrison. Suddenly, they realized they were on to something. They purchased the domain www.patburns.ca to make it easier to direct people to the page. By Monday, membership had grown to 6,500 and hit 10,000 the next day. "Even my dad joined Facebook," Weeks said. "And he doesn't even use an ATM." In the days following, the page was featured in the Toronto Star, the Montreal Gazette, the New York Times and on TSN, the FAN 590 and NHL.com. "I think it speaks to the man," Weeks said. "I don't think everyone who coached in the NHL would have generated this kind of response." While nominations will be put forward next Thursday, the trio and their 50,000-plus backers will have to wait until selections are announced in June to find out if they were successful. "Whatever pressure we can apply, we're happy to do it," Weeks said. "The only positive ending would be for him to be able to accept the honour while he can celebrate it with his family." RE/MAX Aboutowne chipping in for the community The Canadian Cancer Society is gearing up for one of their major fundraising campaigns, the Residential Canvass, which takes place during Daffodil Month in April. Partnering with the Canadian Cancer Society of Oakville Unit this spring is RE/MAX Aboutowne who is helping to promote the urgent need for volunteers in our community. "The Residential Canvass campaign requires the help of hundreds of volunteers in order to make it successful," said Don Abma, the Residential Canvass campaign chair in Oakville. "I am very pleased that RE/MAX Aboutowne has once again agreed to help promote that need in our community." Abma says that in Oakville, there are almost 2,000 individual routes with each one made up of approximately 25-30 homes. In 2009, we had 560 volunteers who canvassed over 600 routes and so far only 468 volunteers have come forward for this year's campaign. "Last year $125,000 was collected by knocking on doors," he explained. "If we could increase our number of volunteer canvassers and cover even 400 additional routes bringing us up to 1,000 canvassed routes in Oakville, we would see a significant increase in the donations collected. Funds raised by canvassers help the Society to fund vital research on all types of cancer and provide support services to people in our community who are living with cancer." Each route takes approximately two hours to complete and canvassers have the entire month of April to complete their assigned route. There are many ways that members of the community can pitch in and help. One example is the canvassing "blitz nights," a one-night, one-time canvass of a local neighbourhood. Students from T.A. Blakelock High School and White Oaks Secondary School have blitz nights THOMAS BATHORY, SALES REPRESENTATIVE $519,000 NEW LISTING Huge Bungalow Backing onto Ravine! 3+3 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms, Familyroom w/Gas Firplace! The students, faculty and family from the respective high schools will canvass their local school community. "The kind of community spirit is contagious and we hope that it will inspire others to join in," said Abma. Augy Carnovale announced that several RE/MAX Aboutowne sales people were helping with the canvass in April and encouraged other Real Estate salespeople to do the same. "I know that Don has been organizing members of our local Real Estate Board to assist in the canvass for the past 10 years," said Augy. "We are very happy to help promote this important effort as Don leads the campaign again this year."
